Lightweight Packaging: How to Cut Freight Cost and Carbon Footprint

Cutting 10% of jar weight can cut 20% of your freight bill. How we downgauge without downgrading quality.

For anyone importing cosmetic packaging, freight is rarely the line item on the quotation — it is the one that surprises you later. Lightweighting is the fastest lever available, and it also happens to be what your marketing team wants to hear.

Why weight equals money

You pay for volume and weight on every shipment. A 10% reduction in jar weight typically removes around 20% of the freight cost of a full container, because carriers bill on the greater of volume or deadweight.

How we lighten a jar without breaking it

  • Optimising wall thickness in the load-bearing areas only
  • Switching from glass to PET where the formula allows
  • Downgauging the closure while keeping the torque spec
  • Tooling changes that cut scrap rate, not product quality

The trade-off to watch

Lighter is not always better. A jar that feels flimsy in the hand loses its premium positioning, and an under-torqued closure can leak. We test drop performance and closure torque after every downgauge before we recommend it.

It is also a story you can sell

“Lightweight, 100% recyclable mono-material packaging” is a claim your customers can understand. Just make sure the number behind it is real and documented.

Want a lighter version of an existing jar quote? Send us the current spec — we will price both versions.
